HOW TO AVOID MARGARITA BURN (“LIME” Disease)

Did you know that touching limes and celery can give you a blistery rash? If you’re eating or drinking with limes this summer, don’t get LIME disease! But I’m not talking about Lyme Disease from deer ticks.

Instead, LIME disease happens because limes and celery contain compounds called “Coumarins” that interact with sunlight. This reaction produces a blistery skin rash.

It typically happens when you squeeze limes into a drink or onto food. If lime juice drips onto your skin and you go in the sun, you may wake up the next day with a rash that looks like a sunburn or poison oak, then heals in dark patches. It could itch or feel irritated.

To prevent the rash, wash hands after handling limes or celery, and wipe off any drips.

If you develop a blistery rash, see a Dermatologist, who can make the diagnosis and make sure it’s not something more serious, like an infection.

Stay safe in the sun, everyone! 😎
