FRAGRANT HARBOR

Did you know that “Hong Kong” means “fragrant harbor” in Chinese?

Asia inundates the senses: the smells, the tastes, the noise, the people. This is because life is lived on the streets, including cooking and eating, which are integral to Asian culture. Each family has its own special dishes - what my father calls “nostalgic food”.

Growing up, my mother sent me to school with garlicky noodles and tofu when all I wanted was a PB&J and Fritos! When friends came over, I was embarrassed that we had nori snacks instead of Jello and cookies.

Nowadays, I crave the food I grew up with. I am grateful for my Asian heritage and my parents’ insistence on eating Chinese food (and speaking the language). Hindsight is 20/20.

As many of you gather with loved ones this holiday season, I hope you get to enjoy your nostalgic food and celebrate what makes you special.

Happy holidays and see you in the New Year!
